Introducing Opera was founded in Edinburgh by musician and writer Derek Watson and meets for 24 weeks spread over three terms from autumn to spring. A music graduate of Edinburgh University and the Royal Academy of Music London, Derek was a WEA tutor for more than three decades, and began this series of evening classes on the appreciation of opera in the 1970s.
He is also a composer, has worked much in the theatre, runs a village bookshop in the Scottish Borders, is the author of books on Wagner, Bruckner, and Liszt, has written extensively on aspects of opera, and founded the Wagner Society of Scotland in 1984.

Study Weekends 2019-20
Following our successful residential weekends on all 15 operas of Richard Strauss at Gartmore House in the Trossachs, we now offer 3 weekends on the complete operas of Leoš Jánaček. The dates are 5-9 April 2019, 26-30 July 2019 and 24-28 April 2020.
