Introducing Opera was founded in Edinburgh by musician and writer Derek Watson and meets for 24 weeks spread over three terms from autumn to spring. A music graduate of Edinburgh University and the Royal Academy of Music London, Derek was a WEA tutor for more than three decades, and began this series of evening classes on the appreciation of opera in the 1970s.
He is also a composer, has worked much in the theatre, runs a village bookshop in the Scottish Borders, is the author of books on Wagner, Bruckner, and Liszt, has written extensively on aspects of opera, and founded the Wagner Society of Scotland in 1984.

The last of our series of Richard Strauss courses has now been arranged at Gartmore House in 2018.
From 6 to 10 April we offer a 4 nights’ residential course on Die Frau ohne
Schatten (The Woman without a Shadow).

A new series of residential courses on the operas of Leoš Janáček is being planned, beginning in the autumn of 2018, and details of the first of these will be available soon.
